How Cultural Intelligence (CQ®) can improve your effectiveness in a culturally diverse environment

by Alice Arandia, CQ® Facilitator

In today's interconnected world, the boundaries of business have expanded far beyond local borders. With the rise of globalization, opportunities abound for small businesses to thrive on an international scale. Gone are the days when international trade was solely the realm of large multinational corporations. Now, even the smallest of enterprises can leverage technology and connectivity to engage with partners, clients, and markets worldwide.

Reflecting on my own experience, I recall the differences in availability and accessibility of products when I moved from Scotland to Bolivia in 1991. Back then, there weren’t any supermarkets in Bolivia. Everyone shopped in markets or small corner shops.  Credit cards weren’t accepted anywhere either. You couldn’t even make a direct call internationally.

During those times, I would ask visitors from the UK to bring me good cheese, shortbread, and Marmite (yes, I love it!). These items, that were readily available back home in UK, were coveted luxuries in a market where international goods were scarce.

Last year when I returned to Bolivia it was very different. Now there is a bustling hub of huge shopping malls and supermarkets. International chains like Hard Rock Café, Starbucks, and TGI Fridays have arrived, catering to an increasing demand for international brands. The supermarkets have large cheese counters, there are shelves of shortbread and someone told me you can even find marmite! And of course I could make a whatsapp call to tell family I had arrived within minutes of landing. How things have changed.

This evolution is a simple illustration of the globalization and the interconnectedness of our world in the last 30 years. Sometimes, though we forget that while cultures evolve too, many local cultures still remain strong. How boring would it be if there weren’t!

Working across borders and cultures brings with it lots of opportunities as well as challenges. While advancements in technology have made global communication seamless, cultural differences can still pose significant hurdles in business dealings.

  •  Building Relationships: Key to Success in Diverse Markets

Understanding the nuances of different cultures is paramount when engaging in international business. In some cultures, relationships are valued above all else, requiring a personal connection before any business can be conducted. Take, for example, the Latin American market, where building trust and rapport through social interactions is often fundamental to business success. From casual conversations to understanding local customs, investing time in relationship-building can pave the way for fruitful partnerships.

  •  Patience is a Virtue: Navigating Cultural Differences

Navigating cultural differences requires patience and adaptability. In cultures where time is viewed more flexibly, such as Latin America, punctuality may not hold the same importance as in other regions. Understanding and respecting these cultural norms is essential for fostering positive relationships and avoiding misunderstandings.
